Harvey Penick Golf Academy celebrates 25 years
Golf icon Harvey Penick crafted the well known swings of Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kite among many others. For the last 25 years, one local instructor dedicated himself to passing on those same timeless teachings to Austin golfers through the Harvey Penick Golf Academy.
Four years ago, with the blessing of the Penick family, Jim Hopkins moved the academy from its longtime home at Golfsmith to Wolfdancer Golf Club at Hyatt Lost Pines Resort. As the academy celebrates its 25-year anniversary, Hopkins is doing everything he can to make sure Penick's legacy is never forgotten.
“It really doesn’t seem real that it’s been that long,” Hopkins told CBS Austin. “The best part of my job is getting to meet new students that come and getting to introduce them to Mr. Penick whether they’ve read his books or not, and show them all these things still work today like they did 25 years ago, 50 years ago, and they still will work 25 years from now.”
Hopkins still likes to keep classes intimate, usually around three golfers for every one instructor.
“The core of his principles and his academy probably would’ve quietly gone away if Jim wasn’t a big part of having it here.” Wolfdancer Golf Club Director of Golf Kelly O’Donnell said. “And of course, the philosophies work for every level of golfer."
