It's not uncommon for children entering the Child Protective Services (CPS) system to do so with nothing more than the clothes they are wearing. Often being removed from crisis situations, these kids can find comfort from items provided by the Rainbow Room, a supply room located in the CPS offices that is operated by the non-profit organization Partnerships for Children.
About two-thirds of the new and essential items in the Rainbow Room come from donations. Serving approximately 700 children each month, the Rainbow Room is constantly needing items like clothes, shoes, and toiletries -- the very things most people take for granted. Your donations can help make the process of transitioning easier.
CBS Austin and Henna Chevrolet kicked off their Rainbow Room drive June 3rd. From now till June 16th, you can donate new bedding supplies, hygiene products, baby items, clothes, toys, and other essentials at Henna Chevrolet.
"The rainbow room provides normalcy in a very scary time when the kids are being removed from their homes," says Marcus Cantu, Director of Resource Services at Partnerships for Children. "Typically, they have nothing but the clothes they have on and maybe a small grocery sack with items, but they really need a lot more and deserve what we all need on a daily basic need."
The Rainbow Room is stocked with essential items like clothing, school supplies, hygiene, and baby items. Baby supplies are among those items in highest demand; they go through about 4,000 diapers a month! By being located in the CPS offices, the Rainbow Room provides needed support to both the children it serves and CPS caseworkers.
"Removals don't always happen nine to five. Sometimes they happen in the middle of the night, so it's nice to have one place to go, and they don't have to run all over town to find one or two things," said Katie Young, Director of Development for Partnerships for Children. "They can come to one place, and all the items are free to them."
The Rainbow Room most needs new items including:
- Baby Items: diapers /pull ups (all sizes), baby wipes, shampoo/body wash, rash cream, bottles, sippy cups, pacifiers, onesies, pack 'n' plays, car seats
- Clothes: Teen t-shirts, athletic shorts, socks and underwear. Gift cards to clothing stores, i.e. Old Navy, Marshalls, Academy
- Hygiene Items: combs, brushes, deodorant, shampoo/conditioner, shaving cream
- Bedding Supplies: pillows, twin sheet sets, blankets, twin-size air mattresses with hand pumps
You can drop items off at Henna Chevrolet, 8805 N Interstate Hwy 35, Austin, TX 78753, between now and June 16.
