CINCINNATI (WKRC) — Stanley cups have become the latest schoolyard must-have, but those who don't have one may have encountered bullying in school.
According to some parents and teachers, the new trend has caused some issues at schools.
A TikTok went viral with an Ohio mom explaining how her daughter was bullied for having an off-brand $10 cup at school. She said even though her daughter was happy with the cup, her peers made her feel otherwise.
Now that kids have access to social media, they are more aware of broader trends.
Some families may not be able to afford the $45 cup for their kids or some kids may just not have one. Therapist Whitney McSparran said there is always some new trend kids want in order to feel accepted and included.
She says this is a good opportunity to talk to your kids about a sense of self and confidence. If you are always chasing the latest trend how is that going to sustain you in the long term? She said talking to your kids about how objects don't define them may help.
McSparran said those who are bullying and making kids feel bad for not having the latest trend need to ask themselves, "Why? How is this making them feel better about themselves?"
Do I really want to tear another person down over plastic and metal? Is it that important? Would I want someone to treat me in the same way," McSparran said.
Therapists say teachers can help create a healthy classroom culture by speaking to their students about the harm of bullying.
Teachers and parents should set clear expectations and consequences for bullying to help prevent it.
