Trump replaces VA Secretary Shulkin with physician Ronny Jackson
WASHINGTON (Sinclair Broadcast Group) - President Trump on Wednesday confirmed in a tweet-storm that Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin has been replaced by White House physician Ronny Jackson.
Trump added that Robert Wilkie, an undersecretary at the Defense Department, will serve as acting VA secretary until Jackson is confirmed.
"I am proud to nominate Rear Admiral Ronny Jackson M.D. as Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs," Trump said in a separate White House statement.
"Admiral Jackson is highly trained and qualified and as a service member himself, he has seen firsthand the tremendous sacrifice our veterans make and has a deep appreciation for the debt our great country owes them," Trump added.
"I appreciate the work of Dr. David Shulkin and the many great things we did together at Veterans Affairs, including the VA Accountability Act that he was helpful in getting passed. He has been a great supporter of veterans across the coutnry and I am grateful for his service."
Trump fired Shulkin Wednesday following a bruising ethics scandal and a mounting rebellion within the VA.
Shulkin is the second Cabinet secretary to depart over controversies involving expensive travel, following former Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price's resignation last September.
