Search on for fugitive sex offender seen in Austin on Monday

An undocumented immigrant, who is also a known sex offender, was spotted Monday in Austin.

Authorities tried to arrest Pedro Padrón but while he was being surrounded, he ran into a wooded area.

“We received information that indicated that Padrón was back in the United States illegally,” said U.S. Deputy Marshal Brandon Filla.

But this was not his only crime.

“The last time that he registered as a sex offender was in 2004,” Filla said.

Padrón was charged and convicted of indecency with a child by exposure and was deported to Mexico in 2004.

“He kind of has a double edge sword.” Filla said. “He is here illegally in the United States as well as if he does come back he has that obligation to register as a sex offender.”

On Monday, the Task Force saw him in a white pickup and attempted to arrest him.

“But while we are implementing that plan he was able to seek that avenue of escape when he fled from the driver’s side and went to the wooded area,” Filla said.

Despite help from the K9 unit and a helicopter, he was able to get away.

Authorities believed he was familiar with the area and probably received help.

“Once he was able to escape that avenue he received assistance from someone,” Filla said.

CBS Austin spoke to the family, and although they did not want to speak on camera, told us Padrón is in Mexico -- something the officers don't believe

“He has family and he has known associates here in the Austin that are close to him and know that he has illegal status,” Filla said.

If you have any information on his whereabouts call the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force at 512-800-4213.
