Senators Cruz, Cornyn request federal disaster aid for Central Texas
Senators Ted Cruz and John Cornyn are now urging President Donald Trump to approve federal disaster aid for Central Texas.
They made the request in a letter on Thursday. They call the recent flooding the 9th major disaster to strike the state in the last three years -- and the third in just 14 months.
Governor Greg Abbott issued a state disaster declaration last month.
"This is the ninth major disaster to impact the state in the last three years and third in the past 14 months, following the historic devastation of Hurricane Harvey and the recent flooding in the Rio Grande Valley region," the senators wrote. "The Governor and local officials have informed us that severe weather and flooding that began on September 10, 2018, and still continues, is beyond the capabilities of the state and affected local governments. We strongly support the Governor's request and urge you to provide any and all emergency measures afforded by the approval of a disaster declaration."
