State Highway 130 could be the new road for hazmat trucks traveling through Central Texas.

Currently, there’s no designated route for trucks carrying these materials, ranging from fireworks to gasoline.

But federal guidelines say Austin’s population size has required one since 2013.

Tuesday, the Austin Transportation Department showed Pflugerville city leaders their plan, which takes hazmat trucks away from busy I-35 and puts them on SH 130, touching parts of Pflugerville, Hutto Georgetown and other neighboring cities.

Council members echo fears from people living along the potential new hazmat route.

However, Austin transportation leaders say they've studied all the options, and SH 130 is one of the safest for hazmat drivers, the community and environment.
