A man is dead after a shooting at a Northeast Austin apartment complex.

It happened at the Heights on Parmer Apartment Homes located in the 1500 block of East Parmer Lane, just west of the Dessau Road intersection.

According to Austin-Travis County EMS a man in his 20s was pronounced dead at the scene.

Austin Police said the incident happened at around 3 p.m. The victim has not been identified.

Several neighbors say they heard the gunfire and saw the aftermath. "All of a sudden, I heard multiple gunshots," said one neighbor who asked to remain anonymous. "Just the fact you can see a whole dead body laying there. The dog is just sitting right there."

Homicide detectives are investigating. Officer Bino Cadenas says detectives are talking to witnesses, to get a better idea of what led up to this. "There were multiple reports of gunshots, so an exchange of gunshots possibly," Cadenas said.

Another neighbor, who also asked to remain anonymous for her family's safety, says her 9-year-old nephew was getting off the school bus and walking home when the shooting happened. She says he saw everything. "Silver Jeep, they were wearing all red, red bandanas. Jumped out of the car, and said, 'I got this man. I got this,' and shot the victim."

APD did not release a vehicle description, and does not have a suspect description available.

Erick Lovelace is a security guard at the apartment complex, and he says an incident like this makes him more alert. "I'm really really on high alert, looking for anything. Looking for any suspicious activity, looking for suspicious movement," Lovelace said.

Neighbors say they're hoping whoever did this gets caught soon. "So now, I'm scared, we're all scared. We fear for our life now."

Detectives are asking witnesses to come forward.
