Police say a woman abandoned her 2-year-old child at a North Austin highway intersection on Monday with two homeless people she didn't know.

According to the arrest affidavit, Felix Marie Jimenez, 35, is charged with child abandonment, a state jail felony.

Court documents say officers were called out to a check welfare call at the intersection of North Lamar and Hwy 183 after a witness reportedly saw an infant under the overpass sitting on an abandoned couch.

When the officers arrived they saw the 2-year-old boy with two transients. Police say the two adults were intoxicated and neither of them knew the child's full name or the child's mother's name. They told the officers the mother had pedaled up on a bike with the child and asked them to watch him while she ran to the store.

Investigators say Jimenez had dropped off the child at least an hour and a half before the officers showed up. The affidavit says the child was saturated with urine and wearing fleece pajama pants in 100-degree weather.

When Jimenez finally returned on her bike she admitted to officers she didn't know the people she left her son with. The officers found multiple used syringes in her bag that had heroin residue on them. And she admitted to using heroin early that morning.

Police say one of the transients with the child had an active robbery warrant and was noted to be armed and dangerous.
