Dense fog is to blame for a massive pile-up on SH 130 early on New Year’s Day that involved as many as 30 vehicles.

The crashed closed the highway for hours in both directions at Harold Green Drive. The scene was cleared and the toll road was reopened by 9 a.m.

Austin-Travis County EMS says over 50 patients were evaluated, but only a total of six people were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The Travis County Sheriff's Office said the first deputy on scene attempted to warn motorists approaching the area, but due to the thick fog and zero visibility, his unit was struck by several vehicles as well. He managed to quickly move away from his vehicle just before it was hit.

Further details were not immediately available.
