A man accused of killing a grandfather in West Austin two years ago was found guilty on Wednesday.

Irwin Pentland was found guilty of capital murder in the November 2015 shooting death of Phillip Liberty. Liberty is the man who was found dead in his garage in the 7100 block of Las Ventanas Drive. Police found Liberty during a welfare check.

Pentland was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Details of the grisly scene include attempts to cover up trails of blood, according to court documents. The affidavit states that a "white plastic bag covered Liberty's head in an apparent attempt to control the flow of blood, which issued from a devastating gunshot wound to the face."

According to court documents, police also discovered more than $20,000 in forged checks belonging to Liberty.

Investigators say Pentland attempted to cash the checks in the days leading up to and following the murder.
