AUSTIN, Texas — Hospice Austin's Camp Brave Heart is celebrating 25 years of helping kids here in Central Texas who all have one thing in common: Each child has lost a loved one.
Camp Brave Heart is a bereavement camp offered at no cost for children and teens who are grieving the death of someone important in their life.
It is a fun, high-energy camp combined with grief education, peer bonding, and emotional support led by grief support professionals and trained volunteers.
Over the course of four days filled with recreational and therapeutic activities, campers hear each other’s stories, explore their grief in a safe and understanding environment, and learn ways to help them cope with their loss.
Maggie Cochran with Hospice Austin tells me this camp was designed to help grieving kids. "A lot of children, when they lose a loved one, they don't know a lot of other kids that have lost a loved one and so to bring them together to spend fun time together and therapeutic time together can really help them grieve and heal as they continue through their childhood and adulthood."
The big takeaway from campers we talked to is that you are not alone and you will get through it.
