AFFIDAVIT: SE Austin hit-and-run driver arrested, victim died after being shot

UPDATE 06/23/2018: Police have arrested 24-year-old Cierra Adele Powell in connection with the death of Jason Aranda.

According to the arrest warrant, Powell drove a maroon Lexus following Aranda to the intersection of E. Oltorf and Huntwick Drive. Aranda exited his vehicle to confront Powell when she allegedly sped up her vehicle and struck Aranda, shooting him in the process.

Police arrested Powell, who stated that Aranda had attempted to attack her in her vehicle so she shot him in self-defense. A 9mm pistol and a fired cartridge casing was found in the suspect’s vehicle, according to the paperwork.

The Travis County Medical Examiner ruled Aranda’s death a homicide caused by gunshot wound.

Court records show Powell has been charged with first degree murder and is being held in the Travis County Jail on $150,000 bond.

UPDATE 6:10 p.m.: Police say the crash that killed a pedestrian in Southeast Austin Thursday afternoon was an intentional hit-and-run.

An APD spokesperson said at 3:09 pm they received 911 calls from witnesses there had been a collision. Callers advised male had been struck by red sedan that had a female driver.

Officers arrived on scene and found a male with life-threatening injuries. He died at the scene.

Witnesses who were with the suspect at the time identified the suspect to detectives.

Police say the suspect who drove the vehicle knew the victim and the crash was intentional.

"The suspect who was driving the red vehicle and the victim had a relationship, they knew each other. We're now gearing towards this is an intentional hit and run," said Officer Bino Cadenas.

APD is filing an arrest warrant to take the suspect in custody.

"We have a possible suspect identified. Within the next few hours, our detectives are working very hard, and filing a warrant for arrest," Cadenas said.

The victim's identify has not been released.

Austin-Travis County EMS said a man in his 40s was declared deceased at the scene.
