21 displaced in NW Austin apartment fire
AUSTIN, Texas —
Austin firefighters battled an apartment fire in northwest Austin Sunday that left more than 20 people displaced, the department reports.
The Austin Fire Department responded to a fire at the Polo Clubs Apartments, 8519 Cahill Drive, north of Pond Springs Road and Hunters Chase Drive.
First in units encountered heavy fire coming from the roof of one of the apartment buildings, forcing firefighters to go into defensive mode.
Firefighters brought the fire under control in about 40 minutes and firefighter Kyle Langhorst was able to reunite a cat named "Sophia" with her owner.
Eight units total were damaged and are uninhabitable, according to an AFD spokesperson. Twenty-one people have been displaced, with Red Cross and apartment management assisting.
Investigators determined the cause to to be improperly discarded smoking material on a balcony. Damage is estimated to be $375,000.
