Police: Man killed in North Austin racing crash was not involved

A man is dead after a vehicle collision Tuesday night in North Austin, EMS officials said. (CBS Austin)

Police say a man was killed Tuesday night in North Austin after he was hit by an SUV that was racing another vehicle.

It happened at around 8:40 p.m. near the intersection of Payton Gin Road and the northbound service road of Research Boulevard.

According to Austin-Travis County EMS a man in his 40s was pronounced deceased at the scene. Another man in his 20s was transported to a local hospital with injuries that are not expected to be life-threatening.

A spokesperson for the Austin Police Department said a preliminary investigation showed the victim was attempting to turn on the service road when his car was hit by one of the racing vehicles. One of the drivers fled the scene in a black SUV, the other is being treated at a local hospital.
