AUSTIN, Texas — The pandemic has forced our most vulnerable to stay home, but many still need food, doctor visits, and trips to the pharmacy. That's where Drive a Senior ATX comes in, making a difference for our Central Texas seniors.
The mission at Drive a Senior ATX is to enable older adults to live independently, avoid social isolation, and age in place by providing free, volunteer-based transportation and other support services.
Drive a Senior ATX executive director Stephanie Lane tells when the pandemic hit, they immediately adapted. Since last March, they've added two food access programs.
One is partnering with Hope Food Pantry to deliver tailored groceries to seniors. With more programs and fewer drivers (since many older drivers need to stay home amid the pandemic), they are in need of new volunteers.
Stephanie says it only takes one time to volunteer to be hooked. You develop a bond with the seniors and for the seniors, it's often their only interaction.
The other benefit to volunteering is that you can pick and choose when and how often you help, so you can cater your volunteering around your own schedule.
