Dockless scooter company gives away free helmets at Austin City Hall
Electric scooter company Bird gave away free helmets Thursday at Austin's City Hall.
Bird called it a "Safety Event" and also provided scooter riding demonstrations.
With the sudden influx of app scooter services, many riders are confused about the rules. Dockless scooters first showed up on Austin streets back in May. Since then, some people complain they block sidewalks.
While it’s not encouraged, it is legal to ride scooters on the sidewalk throughout most of the city. However, they’re not allowed on Congress Avenue and 6th Street downtown.
According to Austin Police riding a scooter while drunk can lead to a DWI.
And riders should always wear a helmet, Bird officials said.
