Cyclist dies from injuries suffered after crashing into minivan downtown

A cyclist has died from injuries suffered in a crash with a vehicle last week in downtown Austin.

According to Austin Police, the crash happened in the 600 block of W. 5th Street around 2:28 a.m. on Friday, September 22.

Police say 33-year-old Justin Richard Shapiro exited a private driveway on the north side of W. 5th Street and turned west, heading the wrong way down a one-way street.

He was struck head-on by a blue Dodge Caravan traveling eastbound.

Shapiro was transported by Austin-Travis County EMS to Dell Seton Medical Center at The Universty of Texas.

Shapiro died from his injuries early morning on Friday, September 29.
