AUSTIN, Texas — Cursive writing, considered somewhat unnecessary for students to learn in the age of computers and smartphones, is making a comeback.
The Houston Chronicle reports that updates to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, or TEKS, guidelines for language arts now require all 2nd grade students in Texas to write legibly in cursive by the time they reach 5th grade.
The changes to the requirements were made by the State Board of Education in 2017, but won't go into effect until the 2019-2020 school year.
