Colorado deputy who arrested accused kidnapper Terry Miles testifies about capture
Thursday in the Terry Miles kidnapping trial we learned more about how he was captured. Miles is charged with taking two Round Rock sisters out of state shortly after their mother, Tonya Bates, was killed.
The older of the two girls testified yesterday that she urged her sister to go with Miles because he had struck her before and she was afraid he would lash out at them again.
Days after Bates died, Miles was spotted on surveillance video near the city of Trinidad in southern Colorado and the Amber Alert for the girls was extended to the area. That’s where Las Animas County Sheriff’s Deputy Darian Dasko came into the picture.
Thursday in Austin he testified how a tip led him to their campground, and how he waited for backup before he pulled the car over and arrested the driver and recovered the girls. Dasko said the sisters appeared visibly shaken when they came out of the car.
Dasko said at the time it was “just a great feeling to know they’re safe.” But the defense is suggesting that someone else killed the girls’ mother and that the girls went with Miles voluntarily to escape an unsafe home life. The trial is expected to run another two weeks.
