Cedar Park murder-suicide shooting survivor dies in hospital
UPDATE: Cedar Park Police confirm that 23-year-old Hailey Michelle Reyes died at 10 a.m. Monday, May 28, at St. David's Round Rock. Police are searching for the father of the shooting suspect, Ruben Perez Garcia. This is now being investigated as a double-murder-suicide.
The Cedar Park Police Department is now investigating Saturday's deadly shooting outside of a home on Dogwood Trail as a murder-suicide.
The shooting left 45-year-old John Michael Garcia dead and his daughter, 23-year-old Hailey Michelle Reyes, with critical injuries and on life-support. Police say the shooter, Elijah Stone, 47, was Garcia's brother and Reyes' uncle.
It's news Reye's former college soccer coach, Arthur Salazar, never expected to hear.
"Initially, I was under the impression it was a car accident, and today I just kind of found out it was a senseless act of violence," Salazar said.
Reyes played for Salazar at Our Lady of the Lake University for three years. He says she was always a fighter both on and off the field and had gotten married to her long-time boyfriend shortly after graduating in 2016.
"I'm really hoping that her positive energy and her bright spirit will pull her through," Salazar said.
Police say Reyes and her father had just returned to a family member's house after kayaking on the lake with family when Stone, who had been waiting outside, started firing at them as they got out of the car. Investigators say he had two handguns but only used one.
Police say Stone had been estranged from the family for 10 years, but the motive behind the shooting is still under investigation. Reyes was still on life-support Monday night.
