Austin prepares for New Year's Eve celebration
You may remember it snowed on last year's New Year's Eve celebration. No such thing is expected this year, but the city is set to ring in 2019.
Austin may be one of the few places where a city press conference features musicians to pep things up a little bit. But in Austin, it makes sense, especially when we're talking about the city's New Year's Eve celebration at Vic Mathias Shores on Monday. "We are so blessed to live in a city with so much talent," Mayor Pro Tem Kathie Tovo told reporters on Friday. "Austin's new year is a great opportunity to showcase that talent and to invite Austinites from across the city to come down and celebrate."
The lineup of musicians on New Year's Eve is long, as is the list of things to do. But keep in mind -- there are rules. Like no alcohol at the Austin's new year celebration. "Family friendly event. That's why we do the fireworks at ten o'clock so the whole family can enjoy them," said one of the planners.
But some parts of the city that will be hosting revelers who are celebrating with alcohol -- say on 6th Street or on Rainey Street -- and Austin police are warning that this weekend is a no refusal weekend, starting Saturday night, every night though New Year's Eve.
But the point is not to dampen anyone's good time. It's to make sure everyone sees 2019 safely. "It is a again a great way to celebrate and to enjoy our local Austin artists," Tovo said.
