Austin PD warns of auto theft scam

The Austin Police Department Auto Theft Unit says they received more than a dozen reports of a scam since the beginning of the year in which teenage girls (often in pairs, but occasionally alone) ask for rides to nearby locations from primarily Spanish-speaking men.

APD says the suspects request trips to nearby places, ask to stop at a gas station or in a store for the driver to leave, leave your vehicle and then commit the theft.

Austin Police is advising residents to protect themselves. Do not give rids to strangers or leave cars unattended.
