A 41-year-old man who was shot during an attempted robbery in north Austin has been found dead in a field, and police have arrested a suspect on capital murder charges.

Steven Conn's body was discovered Tuesday evening in a field north of 6400 Loyola Lane, nearly three days after he was shot on July 13, according to the Austin Police Department.

Jose Duron, 22, was arrested Wednesday in North Austin on capital murder charges in connection with Conn's death.

The incident began around 11:35 p.m. Sunday when officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 7300 block of Duval Street.

Police spoke with a woman, who said she and her boyfriend Conn had picked up an acquaintance, identified as Duron. Duron was sitting in the backseat of Conn's Ford Bronco when he tried to rob him. He then allegedly shot the Conn.

The woman got out of the vehicle, and Duron moved to the driver's seat and drove away with the wounded Conn still inside, according to police.

Officers located the abandoned Ford Bronco Monday morning in southeast Austin with blood inside but no occupants. The discovery prompted a search effort involving multiple police units across more than 200 acres of fields.

Investigators used digital forensics from devices left in the vehicle to track Duron's movements, police said. Members of the Violent Crimes Task Force found Conn's body Tuesday evening, and he was pronounced dead at 7:24 p.m.

Initially charged with aggravated robbery and aggravated kidnapping, Duron's charges were upgraded to capital murder after Conn's body was discovered.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Austin Police Department at 512-974-TIPS or submit anonymous tips through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program at austincrimestoppers.org or 512-472-8477.

The death marks Austin's 33rd homicide of 2025.
