Austin ISD releases video from inside bus involved in crash on Hwy 290 and Mopac
AUSTIN, Texas —
Austin ISD has released in-bus video from a school bus with no students on board that collided with another vehicle Tuesday evening on a highway in southwest Austin.
It happened at around 5:30 p.m.in the east bound lanes of Hwy 290 near the MoPac intersection.
In the video, you can see what appears to be a white pickup truck collide with the left side of the bus as it passes through the intersection.
The school bus then plummets off the frontage road to the highway below.
Parents watching the video for the first time say they're thankful no kids were on the bus.
"If there were kids on this bus there could have been multiple deaths and injuries, it would've been horrible," says one AISD mother.
According to AISD, all of their buses have seat belts. However, bus drivers have said not every student wears one.
Parents told CBS Austin the video is a reminder for them to make sure their kids are buckling up on the bus. "It's just imperative that those kids be protected," says Barry Lovelace.
Austin-Travis County EMS said a man in his 60s was seriously injured, and a man in his 20s suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Both were transported to St. David's South Austin Medical Center.
