Arrest made in deadly 4th of July shooting
The Austin Police Dept. have made an arrest in the deadly 4th of July shooting, they claim started over an argument about fireworks.
41-year-old Jason Roche is currently in custody after he was arrested just before 2 a.m. Friday. Roche is charged with murder in the death of 19-year-old Devonte Ortiz.
According to an affidavit, police received a calla round 1:26 a.m. on Wednesday, July 4th. The caller says a white male, later identified as Roche, was pointing a gun at the head of a younger man. When police arrived they took Roche into custody. Ortiz, who had been shot, was transported to a hospital where he later died.
During an interview with police, Roche claimed to have spoken to Ortiz and his friends about them shooting off fireworks. When they continued, Roche approached them a second time and admitted to shooting Ortiz in self-defense, saying Ortiz was reaching for a firearm.
However, police say cell phone video from witnesses show Ortiz arguing with Roche and Roche's father. When Ortiz pushes Roche's father, Roche responded by shooting Ortiz. Ortiz was not holding a firearm.
Roche is currently being held in Travis Co. Jail on a $250,000 bond.
