One out of four Austin schools that was on the agenda yesterday has now been renamed over confederate ties.
John T. Allen Elementary School will now be named after Anita Ferrales Coy. Coy was principal at Allen when it served as an elementary school and went on to be a district administrator.
In February, Austin Independent School District’s Board of Trustees voted to rename five schools that have ties to Confederacy: Regan High School, Lanier High School, Eastside Memorial High School at the Johnston Campus, Fulmore Middle School and John T. Allen.
However, while the John T Allen facility is now getting a new name, things aren't moving as quickly elsewhere.
The delays started with Eastside Memorial High at the Johnston campus requesting an extension. Since then, trustees have brought up several concerns, like an unclear policy on changing names, and the cost associated with the changes.
As a result of these concerns, officials decided Monday night to wait on the renaming of John H. Reagan High School, Sidney Lanier High School and Zachary Taylor Fulmore Middle School.
It is unclear how long re-naming the schools will take, or if they will be changed at all.
