Affordable Aldrich 51 in Mueller neighborhood celebrates grand opening
Tonight the Mueller neighborhood in East Austin is celebrating the grand opening of its newest development. It's called Aldrich 51 and it's providing much needed affordable housing in Austin. This development was two years in the making and the city is hoping we'll be seeing many more developments like this one.
Austin Mayor Pro-Tem Kathie Tovo was at the groundbreaking and returned Monday for the grand opening. She says, “It's wonderful to be able to return and see the building occupied with tenants with residents and it's just a beautiful development here in the middle of Mueller."
Brenda Robinson is one of the first residents here and she’s already enjoying being close to everything. She says, “Being at Mueller is like a city in itself and I think it's really awesome. I don't have far to go."
Tovo says the city council supports this kind of affordable housing... and so do the voters. “They supported the construction of this when they supported the affordable housing bonds," she said.
And there will be more of these developments coming. Rosie Truelove with the Austin Housing Finance Corp. says, “We have our first strategic council blueprint that was approved about a year ago. And it identified a need of about 60,000 units over the next 10 years that are affordable to folks making below $65,000 a year. So we still have a great need here in Austin for affordable housing."
If you don't meet the income guidelines to qualify for Aldrich 51 you could still live here. 204 Units are affordable housing. That leaves 36 units that will rent at the current market rate.
