A man is dead after a mobile home fire Friday morning in south Travis County.

It happened in the small community of Manchaca just south of Austin in the 400 block of Hickory Ridge Road.

According to the Manchaca Fire Department, the mobile home was fully involved when crews arrived. First responders attempted to rescue the victim -- identified only as a man in his 50s -- but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Austin Fire Department say the structure was a small travel trailer. The fire is under investigation by the Travis County Fire Marshal.

Division Chief Thayer Smith said a resident who lives next door to the trailer tried to pull the man out of trailer while it was on fire but the man was already dead by the time the neighbor arrived.

"He made an actual rescue. He was able to get in and get the victim out, unfortunately the injuries by that time were to severe,"

Neighbors in the tight-knit Manchaca mobile home community said the man who lived on that property was a reliable handyman. Mike Tolle said he's lived and worked with the man for over ten years.

"He ain't have no teeth but he always had a smile on his face. Whatever would be wrong he'd try and thing of something good to say. he was upbeat," said Tolle.

The name of the victim won't be released until family is notified.

No further details were immediately available.
