Forever Families: Alyssa
AUSTIN, Texas —
This season in life is all about picking a forever family for 15-year-old Alyssa. We met the teen at Sweet Berry Farm in Marble Falls to pick strawberries and talk about the moment she knew she was ready to be adopted.
It took time and growth for this season's strawberry crop to bloom at Sweet Berry farm, and Alyssa understands the process. It's her time to move on and blossom, too.
"I don't let the things in my past define me," said Alyssa. "How I define myself is confident, important, beautiful."
"Is it hard to be strong all the time?" asked CBS Austin Reporter Lindsay Liepman.
"All the time. Yeah. But I have to be strong because I have a younger brother and I have to be strong for him," said Alyssa.
She wants a forever family.
"I kept thinking my mom would get me back. And she said I can't get you back. I've done some bad things. I can't get you back," said Alyssa.
Her mom's message gave her the blessing she needed.
"We can't get you out of the system. Don't hold yourself back for our mistakes. You want to move forward," said Alyssa.
Alyssa doesn't love her biological family any less, but is ready for more.
"She'll be super excited," said Adelfa Ramos. "She really wants to belong to somebody. When you belong to a family you don't leave. It will be breath of fresh air and she can let her guard down,"
Ramos is Alyssa's case manager and says Alyssa needs an active family.
"She loves people. She loves helping people in need. She's artistic. She's musical. Just a fun kid," said Ramos.
CBS Austin Forever Families airs every Wednesday at 6:30 pm.
