SXSW: Keanu

There's no better way to spend the first Saturday night of SXSW at a midnight screening than with a Key and Peele movie, even if you are going to lose an hour doing it due to daylight savings time. Even if Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele have ended their Comedy Central's sketch comedy show, they won't be slowing down bringing up their first feature film. As a Work-In-Progress, Keanu shined and didn't seem that there was anything of a draft version at all. Not one scene needed to be deleted!

In Keanu, Rell Williams (Jordan Peele) has just been dumped by his girlfriend. He is devastated until he finds a kitten on his doorstep. He names his newfound kitten Keanu. His place is broken into and Keanu is stolen. So Rell and his cousin, Clarence (Keegan-Michael Key) go on a search for him. They find out a cold-blooded gangster named Cheddar has Keanu. His office is in the back of a strip club, so they end up there pretending to be gangsters as well and saying that they are in the market for a gangster pet (are you already laughing?) When Cheddar puts them on a drop, they find themselves in a dangerous whirlwind of violence and drugs.

If you like silly, Keanu is for you, which is written by Peele along with one of their show's writers and producers, Alex Rubens. There's a scene where Clarence ends up introducing the gangsters to George Michael's music and convinces them that he is black. They are all singing Careless Whisper at the top of their lungs in the car, even though it's new to everyone in the car except for Clarence. Meanwhile, Rell and Hi-C (The Carmichael Show's Tiffany Haddish) is delivering some drugs to Anna Faris, which ends up being fatal and steals the show. Will Forte plays Hulka, a pot smoker, who is quite a snitch and usually knows what's going down around town, adding some memorable moments. You know what you are getting with these guys and it's just more of their hilarious antics.
