Caitlyn Jenner under fire for quip about GOP baseball practice shooting
Caitlyn Jenner has come under fire for an insensitive, ill-timed joke she made about the shooting last week which left Rep. Steve Scalise critically injured.
The Republican House Majority Whip was among those practicing for a charity baseball game against the congressional Democrats when James Hodgkinson began shooting the Republican congressman.
After being shot in the hip, Scalise required multiple operations and is still being treated in hospital in Washington, D.C. Several others, including police officers David Bailey and Crystal Griner, were also injured while lobbyist Matt Mika is still in hospital after being critically hurt in the attack.
Speaking at the College Republicans’ National Convention gala last week, Republican Jenner was asked about the attack, and a Facebook Live video posted by the College Republican Federation of Virginia showed her response.
"Nobody deserves what happened out there," Jenner said. "There’s no justification for it. There’s crazy people in the world — we know that... We have to minimize that kind of stuff. But, as far as the people who were injured, it’s an absolute shame."
She then continued: "Fortunately, the guy was a really bad shot. Liberals can’t even shoot straight."
The crowd roared with laughter following Jenner's remark, which has attracted criticism for being insensitive in the wake of the potentially devastating shooting. Among those slamming Jenner was Will & Grace actress Debra Messing, who tweeted: "OMG (Oh my God). This is Disgusting. Absolutely shameful. @Caitlyn_Jenner."
Another Twitter user wrote: "I support her in her transition but her politics is another matter. So wrong!"
Jenner has yet to respond to the backlash her remarks have received on social media. She did her best to move on from the controversy as she spent Father's Day with daughters Kendall and Kylie Jenner at the Rodeo Drive Concours D'Elegance car show in Beverly Hills on Sunday.
The sisters both shared pictures of the occasion on their social media accounts, despite the fact that Jenner's recently-released autobiography The Secrets of My Life has caused a rift with their mother Kris and other members of the Kardashian/Jenner family.
