'Aquaman,' 'Shazam!' and 'Godzilla' trailers unleashed at Comic-Con
San Diego Comic-Con is here, and with it comes an avalanche of trailers and footage from comic book and sci-fi films expected to hit theaters throughout the year ahead. Saturday brought a slew of highly anticipated first looks, including the next two features in the DC Comics cinematic universe, apparently now referred to as "Worlds of DC."
Scheduled for release in December, "Aquaman" revisits the undersea world glimpsed briefly in last year's "Justice League." Jason Momoa is back as Arthur Curry, a half-human/half-Atlantean, somewhat-reluctant superhero, this time racing to stop his half-brother King Orm, played by Patrick Wilson, from destroying the surface world.
“I want our film to be a little different, a bit more unique, so to speak,” director James Wan told a Comic-Con audience Saturday, according to Entertainment Weekly. “So my movie in some ways plays more like a science fiction fantasy film than a traditional superhero movie.”
Also unveiled Saturday was the first trailer for the April 2019 release "Shazam!" Frequently described as the superhero equivalent of the Tom Hanks classic "Big," it tells the story of a young boy turned into an adult-sized hero by a 3,000-year-old wizard. Asher Angel plays the boy, Djimon Hounsou plays the wizard, and Zachary Levi plays the grown-up hero he becomes when he says the word "Shazam."
"Godzilla: King of the Monsters" is set five years after 2014's "Godzilla," dropping the giant lizard into a throwdown with King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan for reasons that don't matter terribly much. Humanwise, the film stars Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown, and Kyle Chandler.
Comic-Con also delivered a first look at M. Night Shyamalan's "Split"/"Unbreakable" mash-up, "Glass." There's a lot going on there.
If that's not enough, a new trailer was also screened in Hall H for "Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald." Check it out here.
