Sinclair Cares: Holiday toy safety warnings

(MGN Online)

This holiday season, working in partnership with our parent company, Sinclair Broadcast Group, we have important toy safety warnings to share.

The CPSC's new toy report reveals there were 13 toy-related deaths, and more than 250,000 toy-related injuries treated in U.S. emergency rooms in 2017.

Here are four simple tips to help make safe toy selections for your kids.

As parents hunt for the perfect holiday toys for their kids, they need to be vigilant about toy safety. And while some toy stores take special safety precautions before selling a toy, parents should take heed to new toy safety warnings from the Consumer Product Safety Commission. In its new report- the CPSC found seven of the 13 toy-related deaths in 2017 were associated with riding toys. So if your child wants a non-motorized scooter or tricycle, purchase safety gear too.

Before buying any toy, check the age label.

When buying for a child age three or under, look for small part warning labels that mean the toy has parts that a young child could choke on.

Finally, if your kid's wish list includes balloons or toys with high-powered magnets, be extremely cautious.

Parents should also sign up for toy recall alerts on CPSC's website, so if any of the holiday toys you purchase are recalled, you'll be informed immediately.
