Rewriting a reputation

Eastside Memorial High School last qualified for the UIL baseball playoffs in 1992 when the school was called A.S. Johnston High School. Even after the switch, Memorial didn’t win many games – on average, one per year. Michael Eckert’s arrival six years ago did little to change results on the field, but he did change one thing. Eckert’s tough love approach worked. Most if not all of the Panthers players work, so putting all their focus on baseball is difficult.

This season though, the Panthers emerged from the depths of district to do something no other Memorial team had done – make the playoffs. They’re slowly changing their reputation on the field, and a win over Boerne this weekend would go a long way to changing the future of the program.
