A Signing Day Sans Drama
One year ago in Austin, National Signing Day was a celebration.
One year later the dramatics disappeared. Only one of the three remaining uncommitted UT targets opted for Texas Wednesday.
Tom Herman lands just 18 players in his inaugural recruiting class - including three junior college players.
Herman though focused more on the quality of the players, emphasizing the toughness of the transition year class.
"I am proud of the calculated nature about which we went attacking this class," Herman said.
Part of the reality of Herman's situation is he had December and January to recruit for a program that went 16-21 in its previous three seasons, the worst three year stretch in the history of Texas football.
"We can't go pick guys anymore - we have to fight, scratch and claw with teams," Herman added.
Despite the despair felt in the Longhorns worst recruiting class ever in terms of recruiting rankings, the answer to all of their ills is no different than any of the last seven years. Win more games and things will change.
