A phony 911 call sent police swarming to a North Texas family's home.

Police say a scammer called them -- claiming he shot a neighbor. Through a process called "spoofing" the bogus call appears to be coming from an Arlington homeowner ... from his actual address.

"So we have 15 units responding; plus, fire and EMS units. the guy is also telling our dispatcher 'I'm not going to put the gun down because have it for my protection' I'll see you when you get here and disconnects," said Lt. Christopher Cook with the Arlington Police Department.

Officers warn these kinds of pranks can turn deadly. Arlington police say they are actively looking for whoever made that call.
