Addicts turning on pets for prescription opioid medication
Veterinarians say some addicts are turning on their pets for prescription medication.
Veterinarians in Maine must now perform a background check on pet owners before prescribing their animals with painkillers.
They say owners are hurting their pets in order to get tramadol, which is similar to the prescription opioid OxyContin.
"It's pretty rare, but I think veterinarians will tell you, they've had one to two cases in their career where they've been concerned that a human is seeking medication through their clinic and is getting these medications to take for themselves," said Dr. Amanda Bisol with the Maine Veterinary Medical Association.
A couple of red flags include the same owners coming back with the same problems. They also look out for owners specifically requesting tramadol.
