Fugitive wanted for North Austin murder captured in Belton
UPDATE: The U.S. Marshals Service says Earnest Brassell was captured Thursday at approximately 7 p.m. in Belton. They say they received a tip on his whereabouts after his story aired on CBS Austin's Marshals' Most Wanted segment.
Further details were not immediately available.
Three suspected killers are in jail after a murder just days after Christmas. But the getaway driver is still on the run.
According to investigators, Earnest Brassell is one of four men who went to 26-year-old Anthony Brown's house and murdered him during a drug deal.
It happened Thursday, Dec. 29, at approximately 1:30 a.m. at a home in the 12900 block of Quinn Trail.
“This was a planned drug transaction,” said U.S. Deputy Marshal Brandon Filla.
Authorities believe Brassell and thee three others were looking for a target.
“There is individuals that have said ‘Do you know of any licks that we can do?’ Meaning they were already planning to do some type of robbery,” Filla said.
“They were going to buy some marijuana,” Filla said.
According to the affidavit, a witness who called police said that two men were supposed to come to the home to buy three ounces of marijuana from Brown for $600. When someone knocked on the door, Brown walked outside to speak with the men. That's when she heard a gunshot, followed by Brown staggering back inside, bleeding, asking her to call 911.
Police say they recovered a fired projectile on the front porch as well as a small amount of marijuana in a baggie.
The caller attempted to provide CPR to Brown, who had been shot on his porch. Brown was transported to St. David's Round Rock Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. After an autopsy, Brown's death was ruled a homicide after receiving a gunshot to the chest.
“There's been three individuals that have been arrested and now he is the last one out there,” Filla said.
The arrests were made in January, leaving only Brassell on the run.
“He'd be somewhere between Austin and Bell County to include Temple, Killeen and Belton,” Filla said.
