Woman accused of stealing over $50K from Bastrop Co. non-profit
The former treasurer of a non-profit for Bastrop County Sheriff's Office employees is accused of stealing over $50,000 from the organization.
According to the arrest affidavit, Cheryl Lynn Klaus, 54, is charged with theft.
Court documents say newly-elected board members of the Bastrop Association of Sheriff's Employees discovered the organization's bank account was missing money last December.
The only ATM/bebit card for the account was issued to Klaus. Bank records showed she had been withdrawing cash from the account and making purchases for personal items since 2012. Surveillance video was also obtained by investigators of Klaus using the card to make cash withdrawals last year, the affidavit says.
When interviewed by authorities, Klaus admitted to stealing the money. She said she thought she took $15,000 -- but bank records put it at approximately $58,000, court documents said.
