Travis County Sheriff's Office warns residents about phone scammers
AUSTIN, Texas —
The Travis County Sheriff's Office says residents need to be aware of a phone scammer using a deputies' name in an attempt to steal money from them.
TCSO says the caller claims to be with the sheriff's office and aggressively claims the resident has failed to do something such as paying taxes or serving jury duty.
The caller will tell the resident they owe a fine that must be paid immediately to avoid being arrested.
The sheriff's office says the caller seeks payment via gift card or money pack, which TCSO says they will never do.
If you receive a suspicious phone call from someone demanding payment, the sheriff's office says do not hesitate to call them at (512) 854-9770 to verify the validity of that call before giving anyone money.
