Suspect charged with capital murder in shooting death of San Marcos Police officer

The Hays County District Attorney’s Office says Stewart Mettz was charged with capital murder in the shooting death of San Marcos Police Officer Ken Copeland.

According to an affidavit, officer Copeland and other officers approached Mettz’s residence and knocked on the front door. All officers, including Officer Ken Copeland, were wearing distinctive police uniforms and were operating fully marked police vehicles.

According to court documents, Mettz opened up the front door and began firing an unknown caliber firearm at the officers.

According to the affidavit, the officers returned fire and Officer Copeland was struck by Mettz’s gunfire. The officers extricated Officer Copeland from the scene to the hospital.

Copeland died as results of the gunshot injuries.

The officers observed that the suspect had a gunshot wound to his left side. First aid was provided to Mettz by San Marcos Fire Marshall.

When Mettz was taken into custody, he stated that he knew he shot a police officer approximately two times in the chest, according to the affidavit.
