Police: Pedestrian killed crossing I-35 in North Austin was 15-year-old boy

Police say the pedestrian killed Sunday afternoon while trying to cross I-35 in North Austin was a 15-year-old boy.

It happened at approximately 4:25 p.m.in the 13100 block of I-35, just south of the Howard Lane intersection.

Austin Police investigators say a 2017 Kia Sorento was traveling southbound in the far left lane when it struck the teen who was attempting to run east across the highway.

The pedestrian -- identified as 15-year-old Sajjad Zaid Alqassab -- was transported to Round Rock Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

According to police, this is Austin’s 66th fatal traffic crash and the 71st fatality of 2017. At this time in 2016, there were 71 fatal traffic crashes and 73 traffic fatalities.
