Police investigate suspicious package at downtown convention center
UPDATE 8:45 p.m.: Capital Metro says Austin Police has cleared the convention center and service to the downtown MetroRail station has resumed.
Austin Police are investigating a suspicious package at the downtown convention center.
Capital Metro says the downtown MetroRail station next to the convention center is closed as authorities check it out.
This comes after two packages exploded today at homes in East Austin, killing one person and critically injuring two others. Austin Police Chief Brian Manley said the incidents are related to another fatal explosion two weeks ago at a home in Northeast Austin that killed a man.
By 7 p.m. today, Austin Police said they had received more than 80 suspicious package calls.
The two deceased victims from the explosions are African-American -- and Chief Manley said the incidents cannot be ruled out as a hate crime.
