Police have identified the two people killed last week in a fiery crash on I-35 in Central Austin.

It happened Thursday, Jan. 4, just before midnight in the northbound lanes just north of the 51st Street intersection next to the Capital Plaza shopping center.

Investigators say an 18-wheeler was traveling north when it rear ended a GMC Jimmy SUV that had stopped in the center lane.

The GMC burst into flames, killing both people inside, police say. They have been identified as 23-year-old Ashley Martinez and 15-year-old Eloy Herrera.

Police say it’s still unclear why the SUV had stopped on the interstate.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the APD Vehicular Homicide Unit Detectives at (512) 974-5594.

This is Austin’s first fatal traffic crash of 2018, resulting in two fatalities. At this time in 2017, there was one fatal traffic crash and one traffic fatality, police say.
