Man accused of smash & grab break-in at Torchy's Tacos
AUSTIN, Texas —
Austin Police have arrested a man for breaking into a Torchy's Tacos restaurant.
Police say 32-year-old Joey Rangel Ramirez smashed a glass door to get inside the restaurant and steal items. It happened on July 14 at the 1311 South 1st location.
When police arrived at the scene, they heard someone fleeing and jumping over a fence. They set up a perimeter and within minutes, they arrested Joey Ramirez.
The suspect was bleeding from multiple small cuts on his body. He was also wearing socks but no shoes, and his t-shirt was torn.
Ramirez told police his cuts were from fleeing the police, and not from the broken glass at the crime scene. He also denied being involved in the burglary.
Investigators say Ramirez is seen on surveillance video rummaging through drawers, and searching for items. They were able to identify him from his clothing, tattoos, and the moments he looked straight into the camera.
Ramirez is charged with Burglary of a Building.
