AUSTIN, Texas-- The Leander Police Department is warning residents of a phone scam going around targeting Williamson County residents.

The department reports that the call comes from a person identifying themselves as 'Deputy Mark Bowen' with the Williamson County Sheriff's Office and asking victims to go to the nearest Randall's or Office Depot and obtain gift cards to avoid being arrested.

If someone were to fall for the scam, Leander Police says the scammers would then tell the victims to drop the gift cards off at the JP Annex Precinct 2 and ask the person to read the number on the back, which allows the subject to use the cards.

Officers say they have verified there is no Deputy Bowen employed at the Williamson County Sheriffs Office.

Leander Police say an officer will not tell you to buy gift cards if you have a warrant. Officers say the phone numbers being used are:

  • (512) 265-6798
  • (512) 699-6271

If you have any information or have received these calls, you can call Officer Glenn with the Leander Police Department at 512-528-2800.
