ICE arrests 51 in Central Texas, 680 nationwide
An Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation over the past week has resulted in 51 arrests in Central Texas and 680 total nationwide.
The numbers were released Monday afternoon. They're from an ICE targeted enforcement operation aimed at immigration fugitives, re-entrants and at-large criminal aliens, a press release said.
Twenty-three of the 51 had criminal convictions, including a citizen of El Salvador who pled guilty to the sexual assault of a child
ICE says the operation was routine -- and they do not conduct sweeps, checkpoints or raids that target aliens indiscriminately.
They focused on criminal aliens and gang members -- including those who had re-entered the country after being deported. Those not being criminally prosecuted will be processed for removal from the United States.
ICE officers also conducted similar operations in the Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta and New York City areas, resulting in a total of 680 arrests.
This developing story will be updated.
