Group brings holiday joy to Central Texas families in need
There's nothing like the smell of a fresh Christmas tree filling your home for the holidays.
"I'm remembering as kid, looking at that Christmas tree and the lights, and just the excitement of having that in the home," said Lewis Alexander.
But not all Central Texas kids can have a beautiful tree.
"Christmas for a lot of people is the best time of year, but there are those who don't have presents, and there are those that have to make the choice between presents or a tree," said Carlos Garcia.
That's where McCoy's Building Supply and Love Gives First step in. Not only are they selling trees to raise money for local charities, they're helping families get the gift of a live tree. Monica Benoit-Beatty with the Williamson County Children's Advocacy Center remembers the day a mother came to get a free toy for her child and left with a voucher for a tree.
"She just burst into tears, she was so thankful and so appreciative," said Benoit-Beatty. "She was like, 'I didn't know where I was going to put the toys this year, and now to have a tree to put them under.' They were just happy tears."
The VFW post in Leander is also giving out trees to its families.
"A lot of them are really strapped for money this time of year, and it's not the money so much as being separated from their loves ones," said Steve Hixon.
There are still a lot of families in the area who need trees so they're hoping you'll help.
"People get beautiful Christmas trees, and on top of that, they get to help somebody."
If you'd like to help, you can go to either McCoy's Building Supply location in Georgetown or Taylor through Saturday, Dec. 18 at 6 p.m. You can buy a tree for a family in need, buy one for yourself and the proceeds go to several organizations, or make a donation to Love Gives First.
