A former Travis County Jail inmate has died five days after being found unresponsive in his cell.

Investigators say Elijah Ashbey, 21, had been arrested on Sunday, Nov. 8 during a family violence investigation for a felony credit card abuse warrant out of McLennan County.

On Tuesday, Nov. 10, at about 2 a.m., Travis County Jail corrections officers found Ashbey unresponsive in his cell during a routine cell check. Officers started CPR and Austin-Travis County EMS transported him to a nearby hospital, the Sheriff's Office says.

Later that same day authorities from McLennan County withdrew their warrant and Ashbey was released from law enforcement custody, investigators say.

On Sunday, Nov. 15, Ashbey was pronounced deceased.

An autopsy was performed two days later and detectives say it indicates Ashbey used a ligature made from items in his cell to cause his own death.
